4C26: HR workshop, SIG meeting, Stitch & Spin

The Handcrafted Rhetorics crew is cooking up some exciting events for the Cleveland Cs!

Rage Against the (Literacy) Machine: Embodiment, DIY Ethics, and Handcrafted Pedagogies in the Age of AI

Wednesday, March 4, 9:00am–5:00pm
Huntington Convention Center, Atrium Ballroom F

Join Jason Luther (Rowan University), Danielle Koupf (Wake Forest University), Megan Heise (Utah Tech University), Kristin Prins (Cal Poly Pomona), Susan Naomi Bernstein (Queens College, CUNY), and Karen Deaver (The College of New Jersey) to grapple with the effects of generative AI, climate change, and mental health crises by incorporating handicraft and a DIY ethos into writing instruction.

Workshop participants will explore handcrafted pedagogies, first as students doing hands-on activities and then as educators designing their own assignments, curricula, and approaches to assessment.

Our first day-long workshop!

Handcrafted Rhetorics SIG meeting

Friday, March 6, 3:30–4:30pm
Huntington Convention Center, Room 23

The Handcrafted Rhetorics SIG is a chance for scholars, teachers, and community organizers to converse about the relationships among craft, DIY, multimodality, making, public composition, and culture. Join us to learn about people’s projects, share information, and collaborate!

Stitch & Spin craft slam/record nite

Friday, March 6, 7:30–9:30pm
The Loft, Atrium 4th floor

Bring your friends, works-in-progress, creative ideas, and favorite jams! We are again partnering with SJAC (Social Justice at the Convention) Committee and LAC (Local Arrangements Committee), and with Sound Studies and Writing Collective and the Feminist Caucus for a night of making, music, and munching.

We’ll have plenty craft supplies on hand, including materials from the Feminist Caucus to make a quilt square, and invite attendees to contribute to the music playlist at http://bit.ly/4C26playlist.

If you’re interested in getting more involved, we are looking for volunteers to help support the event, such as setting up and cleaning up, with most shifts at only 15-30 minutes. Write your name or make a comment here to sign up to volunteer: Stitch & Spin Roles.Event flyer including information from above and illustrations of a record and a ball of yarn with knitting needles

We look forward to seeing you in Cleveland!
